Kinetic Explorations

Nova Scotia choreographers are creating significant and exciting dance and need to have opportunities to present their work not only in Nova Scotia, but throughout Canada and abroad. Nova Scotia dance artists have the creative imagination to speak to the world - Kinetic Studio wants to give them the opportunity to do so!

To facilitate this, Kinetic Studio has developed Kinetic Explorations, a program to assist dance artists in creating professional productions. This custom-tailored support can take the form of providing assistance with high-quality promotional materials, costumes and lighting design, rehearsal time with dancers, and the opportunity to work with a mentor.

Four years ago Kinetic Studio drew up guidelines which include an open application procedure and an adjudicated selection process, and our inaugural recipient was selected; Susanne Chui, who presented Invidia, which the Globe and Mail praised as being “fluid and expressive” with a “fabulous score” and commended Chui for her “skill in creating characters and ties that bind.”

Subsequent recipients have been Lisa Phinney, who staged her exploration of the emotive powers of the natural world, The World From a Place; and choreographer, Jacinte Armstrong, forged a union of dance, calligraphy, and video imagery in Falling Off the Page, premiered in 2011. The recipient of the support in 2010-2011 was Sarah Douglas who presented her work A Lumine Motus, a well crafted and mesmerizing trio concerning time and our relationship to it. Sarah Cox presented her new work Northern Lights, a carefully created mix of traditional Bugaku (dance) and Gagaku (music) with the contemporary aesthetic.

Kinetic Studio would like to give dance enthusiasts in the community an opportunity to contribute to this project. By donating to Kinetic Explorations, you can help Kinetic Studio in supporting such talented choreographers.

We can receive donations by cheque (payable to Kinetic Studio) or through Pay Pal. Kinetic Studio is a registered charitable organization and all donations over $10 will receive a tax receipt.

This year we are especially grateful to the Craig Foundation for their support of the Explorations program and look forward to continuing our relationship for the next few years.

We thank Halifax Dance and Dance Nova Scotia for their support of Kinetic Explorations. Sincere thanks also to the Canada Council for the Arts, Department of Canadian Heritage, and the Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture, and Heritage, for their ongoing support of Kinetic Studio.

"Participating in Kinetic Explorations was very beneficial to my career. As an emerging choreographer, it was invaluable to have the structure, guidance and financial support of Kinetic Studio while making my piece. What I learned about the process of creating and producing work, has helped me with every project I have done since." – Susanne Chui

“Kinetic Explorations provided me with an opportunity to explore ideas in a safe, experimental environment.  With my Explorations work I chose to investigate a subset of ideas that were related to the large full-evening work I was creating in 2009. Explorations allowed me to delve into a tangent of my creative exploration much more fully than I would have had I simply gone about creating that larger work.  It turned out that those ideas that I explored during Kinetic Explorations did NOT belong in the larger work, so I was able to afford the time to really do that investigation and edit out what did not belong in the larger work.  ln doing so, I ended up with a small piece that can stand on its own. One of the greatest parts of the Explorations process was having access to the great Danspace studio, as well as the help with a photo shoot.  The photos I got were stunning and have been great tools for promoting my work.  Creating at Danspace during the day was completely inspiring.

Thank you for this opportunity for artistic growth.”  – Lisa Phinney
